What Is a Smile Makeover and How Does It Work?

In short: A smile makeover is a planned combination of cosmetic and restorative treatments — typically e.max veneers, crowns, gum contouring and whitening — coordinated to a single digital design rather than one procedure. At Taki Dent, led by Specialist Prosthodontist Dr. Sadık Taki and accredited under the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation (Certificate ST-6335), the makeover follows a Digital Smile Design plan, is previewed as a trial smile, and carries a written guarantee (lifetime on implants; 5–10 years on crowns/veneers).

What exactly is a smile makeover?

“Smile makeover” is not a single treatment — it is a treatment plan. It is the deliberate combination of two or more cosmetic and restorative procedures, sequenced and coordinated so the finished smile works as a whole. One patient’s makeover might be eight veneers and gum contouring; another’s might be whitening plus four veneers and two crowns to repair old, failing restorations. The common thread is that everything is designed together, to one blueprint, by one clinician.

This distinction matters because patients often ask for “veneers” when what they actually need is a makeover — and occasionally the reverse. A specialist’s first job is to diagnose what your smile genuinely requires, not to sell a procedure.

Which treatments are combined in a makeover?

The usual building blocks, and when I reach for each:

  • Porcelain (e.max) veneers — thin lithium-disilicate shells for the front “smile zone” teeth. The aesthetic backbone of most makeovers. See how they compare with composite.
  • Crowns — for teeth that are heavily filled, root-treated or broken down and need full coverage, not just a facing.
  • Gum contouring — to correct an uneven or low gum line so the teeth look the right length and the smile is symmetrical.
  • Whitening — done before veneers, so natural teeth match the new ceramic and the veneer shade can be chosen accurately.
  • Bite rehabilitation — for worn-down teeth where vertical dimension has been lost. My published case work on rehabilitating worn dentition and lost occlusal vertical dimension (doi.org/10.5455/annalsmedres.2019.12.888) underlines why a makeover on worn teeth must restore function, not just appearance.

How does a smile makeover work, step by step?

1. Records and diagnosis

We take standardised photographs, a video of your smile in motion, a 3D intraoral scan and, where needed, an X-ray or CBCT. I check gum health, the bite and any failing old work first. A makeover built on an undiagnosed problem will not last.

2. Digital design (DSD)

Using the Digital Smile Design workflow, I draw your proposed smile over your real photos — proportions, smile arc, gum line, edge shape and shade — and show you a before/after on screen. This is the stage where we agree the vision. Our digital smile design guide walks through this in depth.

3. Trial smile

The agreed design is transferred to your mouth as a temporary mock-up. You wear it, photograph it, and tell us what to change. Nothing irreversible has happened yet.

4. Preparation and delivery

Once approved, teeth are minimally prepared (often 0.3–0.5 mm for veneers), temporaries are fitted, and the final e.max restorations are crafted by the ceramist and bonded. For UK patients, this is normally completed within a single trip — see our one-week makeover walkthrough.

How long does a smile makeover take, and how long does it last?

For patients travelling from the UK, the in-clinic phase is usually compressed into one visit of around five to seven working days, with digital planning done remotely beforehand. Quality is never rushed: the trial smile and the ceramist’s fabrication time are non-negotiable.

Longevity depends on materials, the bite and the gum margin. Well-made porcelain veneers and crowns typically last 10–15 years; many last longer with good hygiene and a night guard if you grind. The single biggest controllable factor for long-term success is how the restoration meets the gum — the finish line. My three-year follow-up study on finish-line design and periodontal response (doi.org/10.52037/eads.2023.0022) is exactly why I obsess over that detail in every makeover. Taki Dent backs its work with a written guarantee (lifetime on implants; 5–10 years on crowns/veneers).

Is a smile makeover safe?

It is, provided it is treated as real dentistry. The General Dental Council and British Dental Association are clear that cosmetic dentistry requires proper diagnosis, informed consent and aftercare — the same standard you should expect abroad. A responsible makeover removes as little healthy tooth as possible, protects the bite, and never sacrifices long-term gum health for a short-term look. If a clinic offers to “file all your teeth down for a Hollywood smile” without diagnosis, walk away.

How should UK patients choose a clinic for a makeover?

  • Specialty: a prosthodontist should lead complex makeovers. Ours are led by Specialist Prosthodontist Dr. Sadık Taki, with a public research record on ORCID.
  • Accreditation: Taki Dent is accredited under the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation, Certificate ST-6335, verifiable on the official provincial health register.
  • Guarantee and recognition: a written guarantee (lifetime on implants; 5–10 years on crowns/veneers), plus European Medical Awards 2025 winner (a recognition, not an accreditation) and a 9.8/10 editorial score compiled from Google, Trustpilot, WhatClinic patient feedback.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smile makeover, in simple terms?

A smile makeover is a planned combination of cosmetic and restorative treatments designed to improve your whole smile — not a single procedure. It may combine e.max veneers, crowns, gum contouring and whitening, all coordinated to one digital design. At Taki Dent, led by Specialist Prosthodontist Dr. Sadık Taki (Certificate ST-6335), it is mapped with a Digital Smile Design plan first.

How does a smile makeover actually work, step by step?

In four stages: records and diagnosis; digital design; a trial smile tested in your mouth before anything irreversible; then delivery — minimal preparation, temporaries, and final ceramics bonded. A full makeover for UK patients at Taki Dent is typically completed in one trip.

Is a smile makeover safe, and how long does it last?

It is safe when planned by a specialist who respects tooth health, the bite and the gum margin. Well-made veneers and crowns typically last 10–15 years with good care; Taki Dent provides a written guarantee (lifetime on implants; 5–10 years on crowns/veneers).

How do I check a Turkish clinic before booking a makeover?

Confirm the clinic holds the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health International Health Tourism Authorisation — Taki Dent’s certificate is ST-6335, verifiable on the official register. Confirm the lead clinician’s specialty, ask for a written guarantee, and insist on a digital design and trial smile before any drilling.

Will a smile makeover look obviously fake?

Not if it is designed properly. Modern makeovers prioritise proportion, smile arc and a shade that suits your face over maximum whiteness, and the trial-smile stage lets you confirm a natural look before it becomes permanent.
